The Defcon Geocache Challenge

Concept
The name isnt official yet, this project is just getting off the ground, the idea is to construct a portable device utilizing GPS, RFID and possibly other wireless technologies to be used in a type of Geocaching contest at the next Defcon convention. A package will be given to each team, who will then assemble thier Geocaching tool. The tool will then be used to locate markers (rfid) that contain unique strings that can be input into a website in exchange for GPS coordinates.

Since RFID tags only respond within inches GPS coordinates will not be enough. This is where Cyphering, Critical Thinking, and other skills will be required to solve the puzzles and access the locations containing the RFID clues. The GPS coordinates will put people within a few meters of the RFID location. The puzzle will then clue the hunter as to where the tag might be placed. (All locations will be accessable via the Deuce Bus, to open the contest to those without transportation)

Current Development Status
I have recieved sample RFID chips from Zebra tags, and talked to Joe Grand about aquiring modules from Parallax electronics. They actually offer a GPS and RFID module pre-assembled. While it would cut down on assembly time and prototyping, the cost of these at the moment is not effective. So I am researching other methods of combining the two technologies.

I would like to make it affordable enough that each participant can build their own geocaching tool, but the other option is 1 per team, or 1 GPS per team, and several RFID scanners. Once the team arrives at the coordinates the members can spider out scanning objects for the RFID tag.

  • I need developers for the hardware.
  • Donations for the electronics components.
  • People to create puzzles, riddles & clues.
  • & Ideas for locations to embed RFID tags in Las Vegas

As the project takes structure, more details will be posted.
